Businesses that replace groups of older servers running Oracle Database workloads with new Dell PowerEdge R7725 servers powered by AMD EPYC 9175F processors could see faster data analytics performance and serious TCO savings—up to $2.1M over five years in one scenario. Here’s how we proved it: 

Every day, we all lean on enterprise applications without giving them a second thought. Whether we're moving money between accounts, placing online orders, or completing any of the countless app-based tasks that comprise modern life, we're relying on the speed and availability of the relational databases behind those apps. For the businesses that run those data-dependent applications, high-performance server hardware is essential for ensuring both app reliability and the back-end analytics that guide smart resource allocation. 

Modern server infrastructure can unlock the capacity to do more database work with fewer systems, letting administrators consolidate multiple legacy servers onto a smaller number of newer, more efficient machines. By doing as much work or more with less hardware, organizations can realize significant savings over time in licensing, data center space, power and cooling, and maintenance. 

We compared the Oracle Database analytics performance of a new Dell PowerEdge R7725 server powered by 5th Generation AMD EPYC 9175F processors to that of a five-year-old HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 server with Intel Xeon Gold 6242 processors. Equipped with the PERC13 controller, the PowerEdge R7725 supported seven times the number of database VMs that the ProLiant DL380 supported while delivering more than 20 percent faster data analysis speeds in a one-to-one comparison. The R7725 with PERC13 also provided over 117 percent better performance per watt. When we configured the R7725 with the PERC12 controller, trading maximum VM density for peak per-workload speed, it supported three times the number of database VMs and ran 23 percent faster than the DL380. Using those results, we modeled a scenario in which a business replaced three legacy HPE DL380 Gen10 servers with a single Dell PowerEdge R7725 with PERC12. Over five years, we estimated that consolidation could save as much as $2.1M in TCO, a reduction of 64 percent. By supporting more database VMs, the PERC13 configuration could deliver even greater savings. 

Savings on that scale could free up funds for other vital projects, making the decision to refresh to modern server infrastructure a smart investment.
